Walking Therapy

It is beneficial to get out in real weather and walk. It promotes good psychological health and mental well-being. Not only at times when restrictions on movement are placed on you but also more generally. Mind, the NHS and other mental health organisations have recognised this for several years. That there are numerous benefits to walking and talking. Being connected to nature can be beneficial whatever people’s problems are – depression, anxiety, loss and grief, or any kind of difficult life transition, whether they are personal, relationship-based, family or work-related. Whatever the issues walking helps ground you in reality and this reduces your levels of stress, depression and anxiety.

The Benefits of Stepping away from the Couch

Instead of facing a therapist in a practice room weekly sessions are held outside in nature. This acts as a calming backdrop to any issues up for discussion. Being outdoors means that there is less physical restriction on the surroundings. In the relationship with your therapist this can bring out a lot of things. If you are dealing with anger issues for example it can feel easier to express those feelings within a bigger landscape rather than within the four walls of a therapist’s consulting room.

Because the activity of walking outdoors provides you with a multi-sensory experience this helps you to reconnect with memories or thoughts about your past. The grounding element in walking therapy, that of being in nature, helps people to recover their buried emotions. Traumatic experiences are grounded in the natural surroundings. This creates a new sense of yourself in your relationship to the outside world.

There is no pointless navel-gazing involved in working with Nick – his approach is unfailingly kind but also challenging, and there is never a wasted moment. If he picks you up on a detail you previously thought was insignificant or asks a question that seems obscure (and he will), trust him and go with it. All will become clear!
